First Look Fish: Reading the Reef

A beginner-friendly intro to underwater observation, identifying fish, and interpreting behavior.

These trips are designed for divers who want to go beyond simply saying, "that was a blue fish” and truly understand what they're seeing underwater.

Through slow, intentional dives, fun debriefs, and educational activities, you'll learn how body shape, fin position, behavior, and habitat clues can provide context for each species you encounter.

What to expect:

Learn the basics of fish ID including body and fin shape, markings, and behavior
Understand why form follows function in marine life
Practice the art of slowing down and observing underwater
Document your discoveries in your Blue Blenny Field Journal
Explore foundational ecosystem concepts like who eats whom and why it matters

Best for: Any and all divers, including beginners and those who want to reconnect with the reef through fresh eyes. Open Water Scuba certification required.

Life Cycle Expeditions:
Right Place, Right Time

Themed expeditions centered on the behaviors and events that make fish endlessly fascinating.

Fish don't follow our calendars, but when you understand theirs, you have the chance to witness some incredible things! These expeditions are planned to coincide with natural phenomena like spawning events, courtship behaviors, and seasonal migrations.

These trips are timed intentionally and planned carefully, and focuses vary depending on destination and season.

What to expect:

Witness natural marine events that occur during specific times of year
Learn the science of fish reproduction and spawning behaviors
Understand how environmental cues trigger life cycle events
Identify juvenile versus adult phases
Contribute your own observations to citizen science databases

Best for: Experienced divers (or comfortable beginners) with a deep curiosity about marine life and behavior. Open Water certification required.

Habitat Immersion:

From Reefs to Rubble

An exploration of ocean habitats and the ecosystems that make the reef work.

These trips include dives dedicated to exploring specific ecosystem, giving you the time and guidance to understand what you're seeing and why it matters.

Habitats vary by destination and may include coral reefs, walls, seagrass beds, sand flats, rubble zones, mangroves, and deep reef slopes.

What to expect:

Identify major marine habitats and their defining features
Understand why certain fish species are found in specific environments
Learn to predict what fish species you'll see based on habitat type
Recognize signs of a healthy versus a stressed reef ecosystem, and what those signs mean for the fish that depend on it

Best for: Divers who are comfortable in the water and curious about the bigger ecological picture. Open Water certification required.

A Blue Blenny Field Journal to document your own dives, observations, sketches, and reflections
Pre-trip digital learning materials so you can dive in right away
